SUMMARY: Responsible for providing assistance to the Principal in the administration of school’s academic and
behavior problems. As a professional educator the Dean of Students understands and responds to the challenges
presented by today’s diverse student population. Dean of Students provides proactive leadership to engage all
stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support students’ academic achievement, personal and social
development. The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principal, counselor, nurse, staff, students, and parents
towards a positive school climate.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• The Dean of Students works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the
general supervision of the principal.
• Meets with parents and teachers concerning discipline, academic, and social concerns.
• Works closely with juvenile probation officers and students on probation by assisting them in correcting
certain inappropriate behaviors among the juveniles on probation.
• Serves as a resource for building staff, administrators, and parents in working with students, creating a
positive school climate, and helping students develop a positive self-concept.
• Coordinates, facilitates and implements disciplinary intervention steps, including school discipline plan,
and processes with staff, working closely with the principal.
• Coordinates implementation of parent involvement as well as school sponsored events. Assists with
school-wide and event supervision.
• Attends all administrative council, school board meetings, leadership team meetings, and other building
meetings.
• Attends all extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
• Attends in-services as needed to stay abreast of the latest educational techniques.
• Implements the discipline policy and handles discipline referrals.
• Suspends students under discipline policy.
• Assists principal in supervision of school campus.
• Assists principal in supervising the administration of the attendance and discipline problems.
• Supervises employees when the principal is absent from the building.
• Performs other duties and services as the principal may direct.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of data usage, including collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting
• Ability to work with culturally diverse families and communities
• Ability to communicate effectively using all forms of communication
• Ability to maintain confidentiality

JOB DESCRIPTION

Dean of Students
• Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
• Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
• Ability to handle confrontation and conflict
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures,
or governmental regulations
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers,
and the general public
• Ability to serve as an educational leader including the ability to plan, organize, and facilitate meetings, school
and community projects and events.
• Bilingual ability in Spanish and English strongly preferred
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
• Master's Degree in Education
• Minimum of five (5) years school teaching experience
• AZ Administrative Certificate K-12 preferred
• Knowledge of State and Federal programs and Arizona Academic Standards, Instruction and Accountability
• Possession of excellent communication and human relation skills
• Computer Proficiency: Demonstrates general proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Excel,
Word, Access and Outlook
