SUMMARY: Responsible for planning instruction and/or adaptation of the special education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares, implements, and evaluates IEPs (including transition plans and behavior management plans) for each assigned student based on individually assessed needs, in accordance with district procedures
- Obtains and monitors present levels of functioning/baselines for students with special needs and maintains data collection to show level of progress
- Provides direct individual and small group instructional services as needed to assigned students with special needs
- Designs learning experiences and utilizes adaptive devices/technology to provide access to general curricular content to individuals with disabilities
- Collaborates with general education teachers to ensure student success in the least restrictive environment
- Identifies, selects, and modifies instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and assessed special needs
- Identifies and collaborates with district, community, and agency services to meet the needs of students with special needs
- Participates on the school-based intervention team, in-school staffing team and in the screening processes, as appropriate
- Participates on evaluation teams for students as appropriate
- Monitors and oversees services provided by paraprofessionals and/or other support personnel assigned to classroom and/or student in classroom
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of strategies and materials for the education of special needs children
- Ability to review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Knowledge of data usage, including collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting
- Ability to communicate effectively using all forms of communication
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education
- Teaching certificate with Cross Categorical/Learning Disabilities special education endorsement

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor classroom environment. This position regularly works indoors, and outdoors at times in all types of weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Will have contact with employees, external agencies and the public.
