SUMMARY: Provides general labor inside and outside of assigned district facility to ensure a safe, clean and healthy environment. Serves as a custodial replacement when necessary.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs various grounds maintenance tasks such as watering lawns and shrubs; maintains sprinklers, irrigation and water systems, etc.
- Attends to a regular schedule of grass mowing, edging and weed control
- Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs
- Sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer
- Further monitors and maintains grounds and fields by raking, thatching, aerating, grading, etc.
- Rakes and bags leaves, cleans grounds and removes litter
- Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs; Repairs fences, gates, walls, and walks
- Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts; Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears
- Makes minor repairs on equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, spreaders and like equipment
- Operates light motorized equipment (tractors, mowers, trimmers, etc.)
- Works with campus maintenance to assist with snow removal as needed
- Paints athletic fields and courts for sporting events
- When performing as a custodian: sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums, shampoos, and spot cleans carpets; dusts and cleans blinds, curtains, and screens; cleans and sanitizes restrooms, plumbing fixtures, and fountains; disinfects biohazard storage areas; picks up litter, empties and cleans trash containers; empties refuse into main bin; May assist with set-up for special events
- Maintains security of building by ensuring that doors and windows are locked; reports unlocked doors and windows, fire hazards and persons acting suspiciously to supervision or school security; denies access to unauthorized persons
- Reports equipment malfunctions, needed repairs and safety infractions to supervisor
- Follows safe work procedures; ensures proper safety precautions, regulations, and industrial hygiene practices are observed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and equipment used in ground keeping and custodial work
- Knowledge of the proper care and storage of ground keeping and custodial equipment and materials
- Knowledge of dilution of chemicals such as fertilizers and insecticides and of the use of MSDS
- Possess basic math skills to layout fields for the various sports
- Ability to recognize potential safety problems and to take steps to prevent hazards
- Ability to operate modern mechanical equipment such as lawn mowers, spreaders, and like equipment and custodial equipment such as floor vacuums (wet and dry), floor buffers, carpet shampoo and steam cleaners, mops, brooms, dust pans, ladders, small hand tools, computer (timecard entry) and vehicles
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- One year of previous grounds keeping experience preferred
- Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements

Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds, with assistance, depending on the physical structure or package of the load. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as table’s scaffolds, and air compressors. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor environment and outdoors in all types of weather conditions with exposure to heat, cold, dust and fumes. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment and will be subject to exposure to odors, chemicals and biohazards. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Contact with employees, students and public.
