SUMMARY: The School Safety Officer (SSO) is a sworn reserve peace officer who enforces and adheres to all local and state laws. The SSO will provide support to the instructional process with specific responsiblities for the safey and wellness of students while on school grounds, monitoring personnel and/or visitors, comunicating information in response to inquiries and enforcing the school, District rules and regulations pertaining to student academic behavior and drug prevention. The SSO addresses security violations in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The SSO has the authority to intervene as a law-enforcement officer.
- May teach school curriculum for Law-Related Education and Safety.
- Be a law-related educator and role model.
- Utilize expertise and agency resources for intervention and prevention of potential crime.
- Collaborates with school personnel on school-wide safety strategies such as safety trainings, emergency response plans, needs assessment, and prevention programming.
- Builds relationships with students, parents, and staff that promote a positive image of law enforcement.
- Collaborate with administration to develop procedures for ongoing communication to ensure timely and uniform reporting of criminal activities.
- Collaborates with community agencies (e.g., law enforcement, courts, mental health, etc.) for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or acting regarding criminal activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the school site.
- Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
- Conducts and monitors fire drills, lock downs, and other emergency procedure drills for the purpose of complying with established guidelines.
- Maintains a variety of files and records (e.g. schedules, incident reports, emergency drill records, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information for future reference and/or audit for compliance to established policies.
- Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g. lunch room, classrooms, detention, dances, home games, 'time outs,' etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.
- Participates in meetings, in-service training, workshops, hearings, etc. (e.g., court hearings, expulsion hearings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Patrols school facilities (e.g. grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security and deterring criminal activities.
- Prepares written materials (e.g. incident reports, referrals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
- Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot.
- Refers incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate site personnel and/or city police for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
- Responds to a variety of situations (e.g., accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
- Responds to inquiries from students and parents regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
- Testifies in court proceedings for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.
- May transports students (e.g., juvenile hall, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the individual's arrival to specific destination.
- Attends extracurricular activities at the school in support of students and helps ensure the safety of students and staff.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of data usage, including collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting
- Knowledge of munical police adminsitration and organization, law enforcement agency policies, and all appropriate criminal laws
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
- Knowledge of law enforcement guidelines, procedures, and policies
- Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhereing to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including software; preparing and maintaing accurate records
- Ability to produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision
- Ability to work with culturally diverse families and communities
- Ability to communicate effectively using all forms of communication
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to maintain CPR certification
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict

- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the administration, law enforcement, school personnel or community
- Ability to serve as a law-related educational leader including the ability to plan, organize, and facilitate meetings, school and community projects and events
- Ability to maintain Reserve Peace Officer certification and training
- Possession of excellenct communication and human relation skills
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma
- AZPOST Certified Peace Officer Certification.
- Reserve Peace Officer Certification and Training.
- Minimum of three (3) year Police Officer experience.
- Bilingual ability in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
Computer Proficiency: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and Email Systems

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. May involve occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or lifting student athletes.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor/Outdoor office environment. This position regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet to moderate and may become excessively noisy at times. Will have contact with employees, external agencies and the public.
