SUMMARY:  Supervises, tutors and monitors students placed in an alternative assignment in lieu of suspension.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensures that all students assigned to the in-house suspension program are present and working on assignments throughout the day
• Under the direction of the administration, performs such instructional duties as:
  • Correct homework and assignments; Assist in drill work
  • Assist in checking pupil’s class work; Give individual help
  • Provides continuity of instruction in all subject areas so that the student returning to the mainstream will not be at an academic disadvantage
  • Gather and arrange displays for teaching purposes
  • Prepare special learning materials to meet individual learning differences
  • Assist students to utilize technology to enhance learning
  • Prepare instructional material cutouts, flash cards, transparencies, etc.; Help with cultural lessons
  • Model good manners and set a good example for the children
• Monitors students at all times and maintain student isolation from students in mainstream during the assigned day
• Sets up and operates audio-visual equipment
• Performs such housekeeping duties as assigned by teacher which may include: helping to keep room in order, proper cleaning and storing of teaching materials, checking classroom lighting and ventilation, putting up and taking down bulletin boards, instructional charts and children’s work and running school related errands
• Brings to administrators’ attention any problems relating to children, their instruction, protection and well-being
• Collects assignments for the students and ensures that they are delivered to the classroom teacher
• May escort students to and from various rooms
• Attends in-service workshops, training programs, and other meetings as directed by the principal or other designated appointee
• Maintains confidentiality so that he/she does not advise or discuss the classroom work or the status of a child with anyone without prior consent or knowledge of the teacher
• Conducts self at all times in an ethical manner
• Requisitions supplies and materials for Special Education teachers, psychologists

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Must possess above average computational skills, reading ability and comprehension
• Ability to operate standard classroom equipment
• Ability to operate a personal computer, learn and utilize appropriate software programs
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals and accounting reports
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
• Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
• Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
• Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response

 

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Sub-Certification required yearly
• AA Degree, 60 credit hours for an accredited college or university or Para Professional Certificate
• Prior experience working with students in a school security setting preferred
• Training in appropriate child-restraint techniques, CPR and first aid beneficial
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education and experience that meets minimum requirements

 

         Computer Proficiency:  Word standard, Excel standard and Outlook standard

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls, use a keyboard or keypad. The employee occasionally is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit, and is occasionally required stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee is frequently required to work indoors and will also work frequently outdoors and may be exposed to extreme heat or cold temperatures, wind, rain, dust or other adverse weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate and may become excessively noisy at times.  Contact with employees, students and public.
